Here is the latest ACC sports news from The Associated Press

Apr 02, 2024

UNDATED (AP) — Notre Dame quarterback Sam Hartman took his record-breaking show to Ireland. The 13th-ranked Fighting Irish couldn't be more excited after Saturday's rout of rival Navy in Dublin. Hartman went 19 of 23 with 251 yards and tied a school record for a debut by throwing four TD passes to lead Notre Dame to a 42-3 victory. Hartman is a grad transfer who set ACC records while at Wake Forest. But his presence can't be measured in mere numbers. Even former Notre Dame star Joe Montana said he enjoyed seeing the jolt of energy Hartman added to an offense that has been looking for a new dynamic quarterback.

UNDATED (AP) — Atlantic Coast Conference athletic directors held a video call Thursday night to discuss the possibility of adding California, Stanford and SMU to the league and what to do with the extra revenue expansion would generate. So far, no new talks are scheduled. Adding schools could increase the ACC's annual payout from ESPN by tens of millions of dollars per year. How that money is distributed to current schools is the key issue. Any expansion plan would need approval from 12 of the 15 schools in the ACC.

STORRS, Conn. (AP) — Two years after the NCAA cleared the way for college athletes to earn money off their fame and celebrity, digital technology is allowing some of them to get paid by their fans without having to do very much in return. Most deals struck by athletes under name, image and likeness guidance from schools or states are in exchange for something — an athlete endorsement on social media, for example, or an appearance at an event. It is now possible to pay athletes money while receiving something far less tangible: a digital non-fungible token, or NFT.

UNDATED (AP) — Welcome to the final season of college football as we know it. That might sound extreme, but 2023 has an end-of-an-era feel. Texas and Oklahoma are taking their last lap in the Big 12. The Pac-12 is still a Power Five conference. Will it even be a conference in 2024? The College Football Playoff is a four-team event for the last time this year, before tripling in size. Before the maps are redrawn and the stakes are remade, there is one more season to left to appreciate what is being lost — or long for what’s being gained.

UNDATED (AP) — Clemson is the preseason favorite to win the Atlantic Coast Conference race for the eighth time in nine seasons. But the ninth-ranked Tigers could face a stiff challenge from Florida State. The eighth-ranked Seminoles are picked second after coming off a 10-win season that included a bowl win against Oklahoma. Looking around the league, the top players include North Carolina quarterback Drake Maye and Clemson running back Will Shipley. There are two new coaches with Georgia Tech's Brent Key and Louisville's Jeff Brohm. Top games include FSU's trip to Clemson on Sept. 23 and UNC's visit to Clemson in November.

UNDATED (AP) — During the final season of the College Football Playoff’s four-team format, the empires will strike back. Alabama, Clemson, Ohio State and Oklahoma dominated CFP appearances and their conferences for seven years, but combined to earn two playoff bids the past two seasons while Georgia and Michigan have been on the rise. To predict a national title for anyone other than the two-time defending champion Bulldogs feels like just trying to be different. Then again, no team has ever won three straight. And Alabama has never gone more than three seasons without a title under Nick Saban.

UNDATED (AP) — Heisman Trophy winner Caleb Williams of USC, Ohio State receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. and Michigan running back Blake Corum are among the returning first-team All-Americans who were selected to The Associated Press preseason All-America team. Notre Dame offensive tackle and Miami safety Kam Kinchens also followed up their All-America 2022 seasons by being named preseason All-Americans by AP Top 25 voters. Two-time defending national champion and No. 1 Georgia has the most players on the first team with four, including tight end Brock Bowers. Ohio State is next with three.

UNDATED (AP) — Just like last year, college football has a returning Heisman Trophy winner. This time USC quarterback Caleb Williams is trying to join the sport's most exclusive club. Ohio State running back Archie Griffin stands alone, winning the Heisman in 1974 and ’75. Williams will have to be even better this year to join Griffin. He faces stiff competition from an Ohio State receiver and a couple of other West Coast quarterbacks.
